"DC Visit" -- Doug Torres
(Merced Camera Club's Digital Image of The Year, 2011-12)

How itís done:

As a retired member of the United States Air Force I have always had a special interest in memorials, monuments, and anything pertaining to military, patriotism, and/or freedom. My last visit to Washington DC was a short one (one day) however, I got a lot accomplished. I took hundreds of photos of items such as: Washington Monument, Reflecting Pool, Jefferson Memorial, White House, Vietnam Memorial, Air Force Memorial, Korean Conflict Memorial, etc. The camera I had with me and used at the time was a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H1 digital camera which has a 12X zoom capability thus allowing me the ability to bring objects closer.

After all the photos were taken (hand held), the difficult task of choosing the best of the best began. When it was all said and done, I had chosen 15 photos to be a special part to help represent my DC visit through a montage. Each photo was methodically placed and rearranged onto my Photoshop 8X10 canvas; starting with the American flag in the background. After arranging all the photos I then adjusted the opacity of each one until I was completely satisfied with the end result.

This past Fall school semester I was taking a basic photography class through Merced College. Not only did I learn more about my new digital SLR camera, I also learned more Photoshop techniques. One technique I especially am fond of is the ability to brighten specific colors while leaving the remainder of the photo virtually untouched. This technique was also put to good use in the photo you see today.
